Brian Lee Crowley, the founding President of AIMS, the Atlantic Institute for Market Studies, addressed the legislative committee examining the overhaul of New Brunswick's taxation system on Tuesday. View story here.
Crowley is bang on. In response to several opposing views posted in online forums, if we don't inject major incentives for business growth into our economy, there will be no "working people" in this province to draw taxes from.
If you want less of something, tax it. If you want more of something, free it. By lowering income taxes we are encouraging workers to work and earn and grow their wealth. By taxing consumption, workers contribute to the tax base according to what they spend, not what they earn, encouraging savings, investment, and accelerated growth.
In addition, Crowley's approach toward lowering or eliminating corporate taxes altogether will not please those who just want to be handed a paycheque by someone else with the responsibilities of building a business and our economy. His approach makes many of us ecstatic - those of us who want new business development, expansion, and investment to spike and for all New Brunswickers to be engaged in the growth of our province!
